Next year’s Waitangi weekend event will be organised by the Nelson Underwater Club and sponsored by Dive Central in Nelson and Ocean Hunter, Auckland. On Saturday February 7th a large vessel will be available to take all divers from Nelson to the competition dive site. Entry fees cover that cost as well as a special competitor’s tee shirt for the occasion. For more information contact Mark Roden. mark@nmf.co.nz

The Mercury Bay Open is a well-established competition that for many signals the end of the spearfishing competition season. Being at the end of the season the weather can often be a bit of a lottery. Not so this year! I arrived in Whitianga from New Plymouth to blue skies and zero wind, even better there was no swell. South Island Spearfishing Champs. They will be held on Saturday March 8. The venue may have to shift from Dunedin to Stewart Island so as to guarantee some visibility. The decision on this is pending.
